Krieger Homers Twice as Pirates Split Doubleheader with Villanova

South Orange, N.J. – Magnus Krieger hit a pair of home runs across the doubleheader and Mason Christopher tossed six innings of two-run ball as the Pirates earned a split of Sunday's doubleheader and took the weekend series from Villanova.

The Pirates took game one of the double dip, 3-2, in a seven-inning affair after John Higgins earned his eighth save of the season to close it out. The Hall dropped the finale to Villanova, 11-6.

How it Happened
Villanova got off to a great start in game one, as JoJo Montgomery hit the first pitch of the game out to left center for a solo home run. The Pirates were able to answer right back in the bottom of the second, as Krieger launched his first home run of the season over the tall left field wall to tie things up, 1-1.

After both pitchers settled in during the middle frames, the Wildcats grabbed the lead on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to go ahead, 2-1. The Pirates would tie things back up in the fifth, as Tommy Manzo perfectly executed a safety squeeze to score Joe Marini from third. In the sixth, the Pirates used small ball once again as Frankie Scrivanic laid down a bunt to score Ryan Frontera with the go-ahead run.

In the top of the seventh, Higgins came on looking to notch another save on his stellar season. After surrendering a one-out single, Higgins fielded a chopper and started a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

Game two was a seesaw battle, with Villanova grabbing the early lead with two runs in the first. Krieger gave the Pirates the lead with one swing in the fourth, a three-run shot to put the home side ahead, 3-2.

The Pirates tacked on a fourth run in the fourth, as Gabe Cavazzoni ripped an RBI double to the wall in left. However, Villanova would use big innings late to go ahead, scoring three times in the sixth and seventh and twice in the eighth to regain the lead for good.
