South Orange, N.J. — The Seton Hall baseball team walked off with a 7-6 win over Creighton in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium that clinched a series victory for the Pirates.
Due to travel constraints for Creighton that was caused by inclement weather all weekend, both games on Sunday were played in seven innings.
Ryan Frontera was the Pirate who put the ball in play in the seventh inning of the series finale that drew an errant throw from the shortstop that went wide of first base and allowed pinch runner Gabe Cavazzoni to score from second base. Kevin Milewski was 4-for-4 on the day with four RBI and a home run. Steven Svenson turned in another quality start for Seton Hall starting pitching allowing two earned runs in five innings of work.
The Pirates have now won their last two series against Creighton in its last two visits to South Orange. Seton Hall has won five of its last six games against the Bluejays at The Shep.
How It Happened
In the bottom of the second inning in the second game, Milewski opened the scoring on the first pitch he saw as he hit his ninth home run of the season giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Milewski delivered again in the bottom of the third where he drove in two runs on a one-out single that pushed the Pirates' lead to 3-0. Before the inning ended, Nick Ferri made it 4-0 Seton Hall on a sac fly that drove in AJ Soldra.
After Svenson tossed a scoreless fourth inning, Creighton chipped away at the deficit in the fifth where the Bluejays made it a one-run game, 4-3, on a sac fly and a two-run home run. Anthony Ehly came out of the bullpen to retire the side win the top of the sixth before Aiden Robbins added an insurance run in the home half with a solo home run, his fourth of the season, that made it 5-3 Pirates.
Creighton wouldn't go away however as it went ahead 6-5 on a solo home run and a two-run blast. Facing a series-clinching defeat, Soldra led off the seventh with a double to left center and was driven in by Milewski on a single to left field that tied up the score at 6-6. Cavazzoni came on as a pinch runner for Milewski and he moved to second base on a sac bunt from Ferri. Following an intentional walk that would set up a double play, Frontera chopped a slow grounder to the second baseman, who tossed to the shortstop covering second for the second out of the inning who then airmailed the throw to first base. The error allowed Cavazzoni to score easily and the Pirates went away with a 7-6 victory.
In the first game, Creighton pushed runs across in the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead before starter Cole Hansen worked around two baserunners to toss a scoreless top of the third inning. In the home half, the Pirates had a baserunner erased on a double play but Robbins kept the inning alive with a two-out walk. Soldra followed with a walk of his own that set the table for Jimmy Brennan who socked a double down the left field line that drove in Robbins to make it 2-1 Creighton.
After Hansen retired the side in order in the fourth, Marco Ali came up with an RBI double of his own that tied up the game at 2-2. Hansen got two outs with a runner on in the fifth but Creighton came up with an RBI single to retake the lead at 3-2. Robbins reached on his third walk of the day in the bottom of the fifth and moved to second on a bunt single from Soldra. Brennan was the next batter he delivered with a base knock to left that scored Robbins from second and tied the game up at 3-3.
Despite battling back twice to tie up the score, Creighton pushed four runs across in the top of the sixth inning with two outs that created some breathing room and helped the Bluejays seal the series-tying 7-3 victory.
