Storrs, Conn. — Aiden Robbins went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and the Seton Hall pitching staff walked just two batters but UConn used a pair of two-run home runs to defeat the Pirates, 5-3, in the series opener on Thursday evening.
Both teams finished with eight hits with Robbins posting a game-high three hits, giving him his ninth three-hit game of the season. Jayson Torres tied his career high with five strikeouts and Patrick Benn tossed three scoreless frames of relief.
How It Happened
Robbins shot a single to right field on the game's first pitch, setting the tone for the Pirates' first inning. With one out, AJ Soldra dropped a base hit into left field that gave The Hall runners on first and second. Kevin Milewski then stepped to the plate a knocked a base hit to center field that scored Robbins from second. Jimmy Brennan was the next batter and he was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two down, Magnus Krieger drew a walk that forced in Seton Hall's second run that gave it a 2-0 lead.
After Tomas Cestero tossed a scoreless first inning, he worked a one-two-three bottom of the second inning. The Pirates got two runners on in the top of the third but couldn't score. Cestero was able to work around trouble in the home half by inducing an inning-ending double play that kept the score at 2-0.
The Pirates stranded two more runners in the fourth and it came back to haunt them as UConn tied the game up on a two-run home run in the bottom half. The Huskies tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth before Robbins tripled with one out in the top of the sixth with his and later scored on a passed ball that tied the score at 3-3.
UConn answered in the bottom of the sixth with another two-run home run that put them ahead 5-3. Despite putting runners on in each of the final three frames, the Pirates couldn't extend the game as the Huskies came out on top in the series opener.
