Pirates Rally With Four-Run Ninth to Stun Nova in Season Finale

After being stymied for seven innings by Villanova starter Luke McCollough, The Hall took full advantage of a trio of relief pitchers that couldn't find the strike zone in the eighth and ninth. After getting two runs back in the eighth inning, the Pirates scored four times in the ninth thanks to four walks, two hit batsmen, a Villanova fielding error and a wild pitch.
Senior Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) shut down the Wildcats over the final 2.2 innings, allowing only one hit with no walks and five strikeouts to pick up the victory.
Offensively, Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) went 3-for-5 with a double, giving him eight hits over the last two days. Justin Ford (Roxbury, N.J.) went deep for his second home run of the season. Marco Ali (Old Westbury, N.Y.) knocked in two runs.
THE STORY:
The Pirates put two runners in scoring position in the first inning, but it was Villanova that was able to scratch across the first run on a run-scoring ground out. From there, Seton Hall starter Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) was dominant, keeping the Wildcats hitless for the next four innings.
With one out in the top of the fifth inning, Ford slammed an opposite field solo home run to tie the score at one. In the bottom of the sixth, however, Hansen was bitten by the long ball, giving up solo shots to Villanova's Michael Whooley and Collin Quintano to give the lead back to the Wildcats, 3-1.
Villanova tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pirates got them back in the top of the eighth on a Kevin Milewski (Wallingford, Conn.) RBI grounder and an Ali sacrifice fly to cut their deficit to 5-3.
In the top of the ninth, Villanova lost the strike zone, and the Pirates took advantage. Two walks, two hit batsmen and a fielding error enabled Seton Hall's first five batters to reach base and tie the game at five. With the bases loaded, Milewski hit a fly ball to center field, Robbins tagged, but was thrown out at the plate, keeping the score tied at five. Jimmy Brennan (Newton, N.J.) walked to load the bases again, and a walk to Ali, the fourth of the inning, forced in the go-ahead run. A wild pitch plated an insurance run to give The Hall a 7-5 advantage.
