Seton Hall Handles Hofstra In Run Rule Fashion, 13-2

South Orange, N.J. – Marco Ali and Gabe Cavazzoni both registered three RBI from the eight and nine spots of the batting order, respectively, and the Seton Hall pitching staff allowed no earned runs and no walks as the Pirates handled Hofstra, 13-2, in a seven-inning, run-rule victory on Wednesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.

Ali's three RBI tied his season high while Cavazzoni's three runs driven in set a new personal best. Patrick Benn earned the win on the mound for the Pirates as he faced the minimum number of batters with one strikeout in two innings of relief work. Aiden Robbins reached base in four of his five plate appearances and had two RBI, giving him 12 multi-RBI games this season.

How It Happened

Seton Hall starter Mason Christopher struck out the first batter he faced and stranded a runner in the top of the first inning before Benn came out of the bullpen to toss his two scoreless frames.

The Pirates pushed across two runs in the bottom of the second where an RBI double by Ali was followed by a run scoring triple from Cavazzoni. The Hall's offense did damage in the bottom half of the third, starting with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nick Ferri before an RBI single from Jimmy Brennan extended the Pirates' lead to 4-0. Seton Hall would double its lead all with two outs as Cavazzoni drew a bases loaded walk, Brennan came home to score on a wild pitch and Robbins dropped a base hit into right field that scored Ali that made it 8-0 Pirates.

With Anthony Ehly now on the mound, Hofstra would get two runs back in the top of the fourth inning that made it a six-run game, 8-2. Ehly would bounce back in the top of the fifth where he retired the Pride in order, including two groundouts fielded by himself.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates put the run rule in effect with a five-run frame. The scoring started when two runs came around on an error committed by the Hofstra third baseman. Ali's second extra base hit of the game was a triple to the right center field gap that plated Dylan Pacheco and Brennan. Cavazzoni then made it 13-2 Pirates with an RBI groundout.
