Pirates Drop BIG EAST Contest To St. John's
10/3/2015 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall men's soccer team dropped a tightly contested BIG EAST contest to St. John's by a score of 1-0 on a chilly Saturday night at Owen T. Caroll Field. The Pirates (0-7-1, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) got four saves from Julian Spindler (Weiserbach, Germany), but could not rebound from a Red Storm (3-6-3, 1-0-1) goal in the 58th minute of the setback.
Luis Esteves scored the lone goal of the contest for St. John's capitalizing on a loose ball after a free kick about 35 yards out served in by Jean Leveille. The Hall had a pair of chances to equalize after the Red Storm went ahead, including a free kick from Samuel Geiler (Offenburg, Germany) 15 yards out just wide of the penalty area that was saved.
The Pirates appeared to tie the contest in the 80th minute when Chris Salazar (Edison, N.J.) found a streaking Danny Bartok (Union, N.J.) in the box, but Bartok was ruled offside moments before sending a shot into the back of the net. The final shot of the contest came in the 87th minute when Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) took aim for a 22-yard free kick that couldn't curl quite enough and sailed high.
Turning Point
After one of the game's six yellow cards was assessed to The Hall in the 58th minute, Leveille served in a free kick that Spindler came off the line in an attempt to corral. The ball popped loose in the box, and Esteves was there to bury it into an open net for the match's first and only goal.
