SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Off the back of a lone goal and a record-breaking shutout, the Seton Hall men's soccer team (6-4-6, 3-2-2 BE) beat the Providence Friars (5-6-3, 0-4-2 BE), 1-0, at Chapey Field on Halloween night.
After Devin Armstrong steered away multiple attempts, Giacomo Mana scored the opening goal on a cross by Til Kauschke to put The Hall in front 1-0. A second-half red card on the Friars sent the opposition down to ten men, allowing the Pirates to hunt for another goal. While Seton Hall did not find a second goal, Armstrong and his defense shut down the Providence's final attempts to secure the shutout victory.
With the win, the Pirates move to 5-4-6 on the season and 2-2-2 in BIG EAST play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the early minutes of this match, the Pirates found themselves on the back foot. Providence's offensive pressure kept The Hall on the back foot. Devin Armstrong stopped the Friars' first attempt on net, and by the 10-minute mark, The Hall flipped the momentum in their favor.
In the 31st minute, a nifty back-and-forth between Nico Rubio and Til Kauschke allowed the latter to slide down the far sideline with free space. As he approached the endline, Kauschke crossed the ball into the box with two players nearby. After a dummy from Joaquin Brizuela, the ball landed at the feet of Giacomo Mana. Mana took the ball on one touch and slotted it through at the near post to put The Hall in front 1-0.
As both sides began their substitution patterns in the aftermath of the goal, the game appeared to settle into a calm slumber. As the halftime buzzer sounded, the Pirates entered the break holding a one-goal lead.
Out of the break, after weathering another round of early pressure, Seton Hall found themselves on the attack once again. The Pirates' offense only grew bolder in the 60th minute after a second yellow sent the Friars down to ten men for the final 30 minutes of the match.
While Seton Hall's explosive attacking chances amid a shorthanded defense ended up not connecting, The Hall's defense dominated at the other end. As the ball pinged across the field, Armstrong made two crucial saves inside the final minutes to preserve his record-breaking ninth shutout of the season and give The Hall the 1-0 win, marking the Pirates' first win in Providence since the 2001 season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Pirates will close out the regular season at home inside Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday, October 6, against the Villanova Wildcats on Senior Day. Opening kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the match being broadcast on ESPN+.
