SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Despite a strong start, the Seton Hall men's soccer team (5-4-6, 2-2-2 BE) fell to the DePaul Blue Demons (5-4-5, 2-2-2 BIG EAST), 3-1, at Owen T. Carroll Field on Tuesday night.
After an early disallowed goal, the Pirates got on the board first thanks to a Til Kauschke penalty kick goal. Unfortunately for The Hall, they would not score again. The Blue Demons scored three unanswered goals, including two in a five-minute span, handing the Pirates a 3-1 defeat at home.
With the loss, the Pirates move to 5-4-6 on the season and 2-2-2 in BIG EAST play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the early moments of this BIG EAST clash, the Pirates took the early momentum. Despite early chances, including a disallowed goal, the Pirates couldn't find the net. However, after a handball was called in the box, Til Kauschke stepped to the penalty spot looking to take the lead. The junior showed nary a hesitation, draining the kick into the back of the net to give Seton Hall an early 1-0 lead. That penalty kick was Kauschke's sixth career goal from the spot, tying the program record for career PK goals held by Sacha Kljestan and Eliseo Giusfredi.
Unfortunately, the Pirates would not hold onto that lead for long. The Blue Demons found offensive pressure in the aftermath, scoring in the 26th and 30th minutes to put the Pirates down 2-1. After falling behind, a wave of substitutions followed nearly immediately as Seton Hall looked to rebound. Despite multiple chances as the half came to a close, they did not convert one and headed to the break down a goal.
Out of halftime, things did not get better for The Hall. DePaul added another goal in the 59th minute to make it a 3-1 game, making the comeback seem like a near Herculean effort. Another penalty kick chance arose in the 71st minute, but the Blue Demons saved that attempt from Kauschke, leaving the Pirates wanting for a goal. That goal would not come, however, as the Pirates managed only one shot over the rest of the match as they fell 3-1 at home to DePaul.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Pirates will hit the road for their final BIG EAST road match of the season in Providence, Rhode Island, against the Providence Friars on Saturday, October 31. Opening kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the match being broadcast on ESPN+.
