SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Aided by the team's best offensive showing of the season, the Seton Hall men's soccer team (5-3-6, 2-1-2 BE) dominated the St. John's Red Storm (5-7-2, 1-2-2 BIG EAST), 3-0, at Owen T. Carroll Field on Saturday night in a heated BIG EAST clash.
After a slow start, the Pirates exploded out to a 2-0 halftime lead off the back of explosive goals by Charlie Herley and Joaquin Brizuela. In the second half, Tim Valentine would add his own goal to pair with his two assists to make it a three-goal lead. In the final half hour, the Pirates' defense held the Red Storm shotless to preserve the 3-0 win.
With the win, the Pirates move to 5-3-6 on the season and 2-1-2 in BIG EAST play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In front of an active crowd at Owen T. Carroll Field, the Pirates found themselves on the back foot early. The Red Storm pinged the ball around the field with ease while stifling the Pirates' offense by cutting off passing lanes. Slowly, however, the momentum began to shift as the home side settled into the match.
In the 16th minute, The Hall streaked up the field while St. John's defense was not set. Nico Rubio crossed the ball into the box from the right wing to Tim Valentine at the edge of the penalty spot. After a heavy touch by the freshman, Charlie Herley flew into the box from midfield amid the chaos. In one swift motion, the senior launched the ball into the net for his first goal in two months to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead early in the match.
Now sitting with the lead, Seton Hall's offense seemed even more emboldened and began flying up the field with vigor. The main beneficiary of the pace change was the Pirates' striker Joaquin Brizuela. After forcing two saves, including one by a defender when Brizuela chipped the keeper, the Argentinian finally found his golden chance. From nearly an identical spot as Rubio's assist, Herley launched his own cross into the box. After a dummy by Valentine, Brizuela sliced the ball through a crowded box to the far post. Despite an attempt to save it by St. John's, the ball carried too much momentum, handing Brizuela his first goal with the Pirates to double the lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
Out of the break, the Red Storm's offensive pressure returned amid their search for a way back into the match. Among their three shots in the opening ten minutes of the half, only one required action by Devin Armstrong. In the 54th minute, the Red Storm sent a ball flying towards the far post with no defender nearby. Armstrong, however, read the play beautifully and parried the ball out to collect a save.
After that extremely dangerous moment, the Pirates immediately turned the tables on St. John's. With the help of a field-flipping pass, Til Kauschke found himself streaking down the field in a one-on-one situation. After launching a shot that rebounded back into the field of play, Tim Valentine collected the ball and sent it into the goal, making it a 3-0 Seton Hall lead with 32 minutes remaining in the match.
Despite St. John's desperation continuing to grow, the Pirates fully dominated their opposition across the final half hour. The Hall's defense shut down every explosive chance, not yielding a single Red Storm shot in the aftermath of the goal. While the Pirates' final seven shots did not yield any fruit, it would not matter. As the final whistle sounded, Seton Hall collected their second BIG EAST win of the season in dominant fashion, 3-0, over St. John's.
