Queens, N.Y. – Seton Hall women's soccer clinched its first BIG EAST Tournament berth in 15 years on Saturday night, securing the No. 3 seed after a 0-0 draw at St. John's to wrap up the regular season.
The Pirates entered the day needing a victory to secure a spot in the top-four, however earlier results from around the league meant Seton Hall could also clinch with a draw. The Pirates outshot the Red Storm, 13-11, and Kate Kleinsmith made five saves to help lock up the postseason berth.
How it Happened
The Pirates would possess the ball for much of the night's action, and in the first few minutes were able to generate some strong looks at goal. In the seventh minute, a Nicole Proia shot had to be taken care of by St. John's goalkeeper Kayla Bower. Just a few minutes later in the 13th minute, a Kileigh Gorman shot also was steered on frame but into the arms of Bower.
The start of the second half saw the ball stick in the midfield for the majority, as neither side were able to generate any threatening looks until the final 20 minutes. In the 71st minute, the Red Storm built an attack and sent a cross into the middle of the penalty area. The Red Storm's Nora Basile had a point-blank chance against Kleinsmith, but the Pirate keeper was able to get in the way of the initial shot. The rebound glanced out to Leana Ruiz, who sent the ensuing shot over the bar and out of harm's way. Kleinsmith was called into action once more in the 87th minute on another shot from Basile, corralling it and helping her team clinch a postseason berth.
