South Orange, N.J. – Sabrina Campbell scored her first goal as a Pirate in the 66th minute as Seton Hall picked up a huge three points in the BIG EAST standings with a 1-0 win over Creighton on Saturday. The victory puts the Pirates in the driver's seat for a top-four seed, as a win next Saturday at St. John's would send Seton Hall to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2011.
How it Happened
Despite no shots for either side through the early portion of the match, Creighton would be the ones to control the run of play for the first 30 minutes of action. Seton Hall grew into the game with about 15 minutes left until halftime, generating a few chances late in the half. The match would remain scoreless at the break with the Bluejays holding the edge in shots, 6-2.
Soon after halftime, looked like they had found some attacking footing. Leyla Sanders laced a shot towards goal in the 49th minute that glanced off the right post and stayed out. A few minutes later, a Kileigh Gorman shot was stopped by Creighton goalkeeper Morgan Paley.
In the 66th minute, The Hall would finally break the ice. Macie Mietz tossed the ball into the penalty area on a long throw-in from the near touchline. After deflecting off the head of a Bluejay defender, the ball bounced down for Campbell, who settled it and flicked it past the keeper to put Seton Hall in front.
The Pirate defense, as it has done all season long, stood tall down the stretch to maintain the one-goal edge. Creighton had numerous set pieces in the final 25 minutes, however the Bluejays were able to muster just one total shot after the Campbell goal.
In goal, Kate Kleinsmith earned yet another shutout to grow her total to nine on the season. Her goals against average now sits at a miniscule 0.44.
