Pirates Conclude First Half of Spring Break Trip

Game 1 Saturday – UMass 8, Seton Hall 5
How it Happened
- It was The Hall that took an early lead, jumping ahead 2-0 by way of a two-run Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas) home run
- After the Minutewomen got a run back in the bottom of the first, the Pirates pushed their lead back to two in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly from Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.)
- UMass took its first lead of the day with a three-spot in the bottom of the third
- Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) evened the contest at 4-4 with a solo home run in the top of the fourth, and another Arteaga sac fly in the fifth put the Pirates back ahead
- Massachusetts answered once again, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-5, a lead it would hold the rest of the way
- Umass finished with a 12-8 edge in hits and committed both of the game's two errors
- Allender and Arteaga both finished with two RBIs for the Pirates
- Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) notched a pair of hits for The Hall, including a triple
- Payton Beaver (Lake Stevens, Wash.) finished 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored
- The setback dropped the Pirates to 1-6 all-time against UMass
Game 2 Saturday – Central Connecticut 11, Seton Hall 9
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils jumped out to a big early lead, scoring seven times in the first three innings
- The Hall began to chip away in the bottom of the third, pushing two runs across with an Arteaga home run and a Katherine Matthys (Spring Branch, Texas) RBI double
- CCSU would plate four more runs in the top of the fifth to go up 11-2
- The Pirates again continued to fight, putting up a four-spot of their own in the bottom of the fifth that included RBI hits from Jaden Tate (Las Vegas, Nev.), Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.), Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) and Barracato
- The Hall got within two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Arteaga tripled and scored, but it could not come all the way back and complete the comeback
- The Pirates finished with a slight 11-10 edge in hits, but committed four errors for the game
- Tate had three of The Hall's hits in a 3-for-3, two-run, two-RBI day
- Arteaga, Matthys and Peck each had two hits for the Pirates and Matthys knocked in a pair of runs
- The home run for Arteaga was her second of the season
- The Pirates fell to 3-6 all-time against CCSU after an earlier match-up this season was rained out
Sunday – Seton Hall 7, Chattanooga 6
How it Happened
- The Mocs jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the first via a two-run double
- The Hall got one back with an RBI double from J. Tate in the bottom of the second
- The Pirates took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth, pushing runs across by way of a Matthys single and Beaver sac fly
- The Mocs re-took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth, but the advantage was short-lived after Pandolfo hit a home run to give SHU a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the frame
- Chattanooga answered again in the top of the sixth with a solo home run
- In the bottom of the sixth, Arteaga delivered an RBI double and Peck plated her later in the frame with an RBI single to give the Pirates a 7-5 edge
- The Mocs got back within a run with a solo home run in the top of the seventh before Mo Sobel (Newbury Parks, Calif.) was able to strand the potential tying run on base and notch the save
- Both squads had 11 hits on the day, with UTC felled by three errors
- Pandolfo's home run was her third of the year, tied for the team-high
- Peck finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Arteaga and Matthys both had two hits
- Six different Pirates knocked in a run in the balanced offensive attack
- The contest was the second all-time between SHU and UT-Chattanooga, evening the series at 1-1
The Pirates return to action in Clearwater next weekend for four more games, starting with Eastern Illinois on Friday, March 15.
