How It Happened
- The Pirates pounced early in the opening game of this clash against St. John's. With two runners on and one out, following a single and an error, Naya Martinez sent a single into right field. Aided by an error from the Red Storm's right fielder, both Sophia DeMarco and Katey Brennan came around the score to give The Hall a 2-0 lead after their turn at the plate was up.
- However, the Johnnies responded in swift fashion, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to snatch the lead from The Hall and put them in a 3-2 hole.
- However, after a quiet second inning by both sides, it was Lea Kosinski's turn to make some noise. The graduate student, with two outs and two runners on, launched a double into left field, scoring Brennan and Martinez to put Seton Hall back in front, 4-3.
- Yet, once again, the Pirates could not rest easy. The Red Storm quickly retook the lead in the fourth on a two-run single, before expanding the deficit to two, 6-4, on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
- The Hall had one more chance to even things up in the seventh inning. Erin Howard quickly pounced on a 1-2 pitch to lead off the inning, launching a home run to make it a two-run game. Not long after, a one-out double by Andrea Perez brought the tying run to the plate as The Hall started coming alive. Unfortunately, they could not find the equalizer, ultimately falling 7-5 to the Red Storm in game one.
- In game two, the Red Storm struck first. After a single and two errors, a sacrifice fly rang out to give the home side an early 1-0 advantage.
- The Hall's deficit grew in the third when St. John's recorded a three-run frame, putting the Pirates in a 4-0 hole.
- After recording a pair of hits in the fourth, Seton Hall had a chance to record a response with only one out in the inning. Unfortunately, the next two batters went by the wayside, and the four-run deficit remained.
- While the Pirates' bats were silenced over the remaining innings, the Red Storm continued to grow the deficit. Over the next three innings, St. John's recorded four runs, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, to hand Seton Hall an 8-0 loss in six innings.
- With the losses, the Pirates move to 18-28 on the season and 6-17 in BIG EAST play.
- With one hit today, Benitez has recorded a hit in 40 of 46 games this season.
- With two hits in each game today, Martinez has reached six multi-hit games this season.
- Howard recorded her third home run of the season and ninth multi-hit game of the season.
- Kosinski recorded her fourth multi-RBI game this season.
The Pirates will close out BIG EAST play on Sunday, April 26, with the final game of the series against the St. John's Red Storm. The start time for the game is to be decided.
