SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Despite a five-run first inning, the Seton Hall softball team (6-8) fell in its BIG EAST home opener to Creighton (7-14), 20-10, at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field.

How It Happened

Despite collecting two quick outs, the Pirates gave up two runs in the first inning to face an early 2-0 deficit.
When The Hall got its chance at the plate, they quickly loaded the bases with one out. After Naya Martinez added a sacrifice fly, Erin Howard quickly followed it up with a two-RBI double to give Seton Hall a 3-2 lead.
Before the end of the first, Loreale Blake laced a two-RBI single through the infield to make it a 5-2 Pirates' lead.
The lead would not last long, however, as the Blue Jays dropped seven runs in the seventh to make it a 9-5 game. By the end of the third, Creighton had extended The Hall's deficit to 13-5.
The Pirates pulled one run back in the fourth inning when Sophia DeMarco singled home Christina Ginex.
As the seventh inning progressed, another seven-run outburst from Creighton expanded it to a 20-6 game.
The Pirates would claw back a few runs, however. Martinez and Brennan both scored on errors, while Blake and Benitez each drove home a run on groundouts.
However, The Hall's late rally fell short and the Pirates fell 20-10.

News & Notes

With the loss, the Pirates move to 6-8 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play.
With one hit today, Benitez extended her hitting streak to seven games.
Blake recorded her first three RBI in her first career start.
Howard recorded the 10^th multi-RBI game of her career.
Benitez, DeMarco and Martinez each logged one RBI.

What's Next
The Pirates will continue play against Creighton on Saturday, March 7. First pitch for the opening game is slated for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on YouTube.
