Pirates Fire On All Cylinders in Record-Setting Doubleheader Sweep of St John's
4/13/2025 7:38:00 PM | Softball
How It Happened (Game One)
- After Friday's narrow loss to St. John's, Kelsey Carr returned to the circle looking for redemption. In that quest, Carr produced her best start of the season. It began in the first inning when she retired the opening three batters in order, two of which came on strikeouts.
- While Carr locked down the Red Storm in the circle, the Pirates had multiple opportunities to score in the opening five innings of the game. However, despite getting a pair of runners on in the first, fourth and fifth innings, the Pirates struggled to find the difference-making hit.

- In the top of the sixth inning, St. John's had their best chance of the day, to that point, to score with runners on the corners and two outs. Carr induced a pop up to end the inning and kept the game scoreless, 0-0.
- In the bottom of the frame, Hannah Alexander led off the inning with an infield single. Two batters later, Olivia Gilbert doubled to put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth. A strikeout would immediately follow, leaving the Pirates with one out to play with in the inning.
- Up to bat came Andrea Perez, who was 1-2 on the day with a single up to that point. After going down 1-2 in the count, the junior battled back to make it a full count. On the ninth pitch of the at-bat, Perez crushed the pitch over the centerfield wall. The Pirates rushed out of the dugout to celebrate with the shortstop as she crossed home plate to put the Pirates in front 3-0.

- After a pop-up ended the Pirates sixth-inning rally, Carr returned to the mound looking to secure a 3-0 win. An RBI single would plate a single run, but Carr got the final Red Storm hitter to line-out, handing the Pirates a 3-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
- To open the second game Kyra Kreuscher produced a near-identical inning Carr's in game one, drawing two strikeouts and retiring all three batters.
- The Pirates returned to the plate still thriving off the energy from their game one win and immediately took a bite out of St. John's in the bottom of the first. Caroline Hobbes, Carr and Alexander all reached base with one out. A sacrifice fly by Naya Martinez scored Hobbes, putting the Pirates up 1-0.
- Gilbert stepped up to the plate next with more than a one run lead in mind. Facing a 2-2 count, Gilbert demolished a ball over the right field wall to put The Hall up 4-0 at the end of the first inning.

- After another stellar inning from Kreuscher, the Pirates returned to the plate in the second inning with the momentum fully in their favor. Katey Brennan converted a leadoff walk into a run thanks to a triple from Hobbes to extend the lead to 5-0. Carr immediately singled in the aftermath, making it a 6-0 Pirate lead.
- The Pirates capped off their second-inning salvo with a two-run home run from Alexander to put The Hall up 8-0 though two innings.

- The Pirates offensive prowess continued to show in the third inning, where Taylor Hill knocked an RBI double to make it a 9-0 game. With that double, Hill moved into sole possession of the program record for career doubles.
- Brennan capped off the Pirates' power-packed day with an RBI groundout, making it 10-0 at the end of three innings.
- After not allowing a hit through three innings, a defensive miscalculation led to a two-out infield single that ended Kreuscher's no-hitter bid. However, two batters later, the Pirates induced a fly out to end the top of the fourth inning without allowing a run.
- While the Pirates failed to add a run in the bottom of the fourth, Kreuscher returned to the circle in the fifth inning on the precipice of a run-rule victory.
- Despite allowing a pair of single, Kreuscher ended her career-best performance with a swinging strikeout and a pop up to secure the 10-0 victory over St. John's in five innings.
