Game 1: Seton Hall 12, Fairleigh Dickinson 2 (5 innings)
How it Happened
- The Pirates got on the board early, as Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) got her red-hot doubleheader started with an RBI single to center to make it 1-0.
- After FDU tallied two in the third to take the lead, the Pirates adopted a patient approach to regain the lead. Seton Hall scored five runs in the bottom of the third on five consecutive bases loaded walks. The first of those walks was drawn by Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) after a 15-pitch battle.
- The Hall added another run in the fourth, as Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) tapped one through the left side to score Wingo with the seventh Pirate run.
- In the fifth, the Pirates would tally five more runs to enact the run rule win. Wingo laced a double to the left center gap to score Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.). Next, Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in a run. Perez would ice the game with a three-run home run down the left field line, her second of the season.
- This marked the sixth time this season in which the Pirates have scored double digit runs, and it is also their eighth run-rule win of the year.
- Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) worked all five innings in the circle on her 22nd birthday, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Smith also went 2-for-3 with a run scored at the plate.
- Perez's four runs batted in are a new season high.
How it Happened
- Once again, Wingo got the Pirates on the board in the bottom of the first. This time her production came from hitting her fifth home run of the season over the wall in right to give Seton Hall the 1-0 edge.
- FDU's bats awoke in the second, scoring six times to take a 6-1 lead. The Knights would lead by that same score until the fifth.
- The Pirates would go to work in their final two trips to the plate to mount a comeback. In the fifth, Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) ripped a double to left field to score Colonnetta, and Wingo would double home Hill to make the score 6-3. Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) hit a ground ball to short that looked like it would end the inning, but an errant throw allowed Gilbert to reach and Wingo to score.
- In the sixth, Wingo continued her huge day witha two-run single down the third base line to even the score at 6-6. Later in the inning, Gilbert would hit an infield single past the pitcher to put the Pirates ahead. Carr would add some insurance with a rocket single to left field to make it 8-6.
- Kyra Kreuscher (Great River, N.Y.) shut the door in the seventh inning to preserve the victory. The freshman came on in relief in the third inning and tossed five shutout innings to earn the win.
- On the doubleheader, Wingo went a combined 5-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and six RBI.
- Wingo sits 10 base hits shy of breaking the Pirates' single-season record of 64, which is held by Valerie Suto and Katie Pierce. Wingo is also 10 runs away from breaking Pierce's record for runs scored in a season.
- Wingo's batting average for the season now sits at .414, which would be the second-highest in a season in program history.
- In Kreuscher's five shutout innings, she surrendered just four hits and struck out five. This outing came just one day after allowing 11 runs over four innings at Marist on Tuesday.
- The Pirates have scored eight or more runs in seven of their last 10 games.
The Pirates head back on the road this weekend for a three-game series at Providence beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
