Pirates Cruise to 10th Consecutive BIG EAST Win
4/21/2023 5:31:00 PM | Softball
How it Happened
- The Pirates got right to work in the top of the first, plating a pair of runs. Those tallies came on back-to-back singles by Carr and Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) to spot the visitors an early 2-0 advantage.
- Carr danced around a couple of jams in her outing, including the first where the Friars' first two batters reached base. Carr escaped unscathed by setting down the next three batters to keep it a 2-0 Pirates lead.
- Carr's escapism was rewarded instantly in the top of the second, as Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) added another run to the scoreboard with an RBI single to center.
- After a quiet second inning, Providence threatened once again in the third by loading the bases. Carr was able to dodge the threat by getting one of her six strikeouts on the day to end the frame.
- In the fifth, the Pirates sent 13 batters to the plate and scored seven times to pull away for good. The first run of the frame came on an RBI single by Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.), who extended her hitting streak to 14 games. Later in the inning, Smith would score on a wild pitch and Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) would slap a single into left to make it 6-0. After another run scored on an error, a pair of bases loaded walks and an RBI single by Carr brought the score up to 10-0.
- Carr finished the job in the fifth, retiring the final seven batters she faced to seal the shutout.
- The 10-game conference winning streak surpasses the previous mark of nine straight set during the 1999 season.
- The Pirates are two wins shy of matching their most BIG EAST wins in a season.
- Wingo's 14-game hitting streak is her second such streak of the season, and is once again two shy of matching Yasmin Harrell's program mark.
- Wingo is now nine hits and nine runs scored away from breaking both single season records.
- Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) had a base hit on the day to move up to 98 career hits.
The Pirates continue their series with Providence on Saturday, when the two sides will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
