South Orange, N.J. – Despite a heroic thirteen-inning effort from starting pitcher Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas), the Seton Hall softball team fell to DePaul, 2-1 in extra innings on Friday. Smith tossed all 13 innings for the Pirates surrendering just on earned run and striking out 11, throwing 176 pitches in the process.

How it Happened

After trading scoreless frames to start the first four innings, the Blue Demons were the first team on the board with an RBI-single in the fifth to make it a 1-0 game.
The Pirates would respond with a run of their own in the sixth. After singles from Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa. ) and Smith, a Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) sacrifice fly would score Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) to knot the ballgame at on heeding to the seventh.

The Pirates would threaten in extras, putting two runners on in the 10^th and 11^th but could not scratch a run across.
Following a leadoff triple to start the 13^th for the Blue Demons, Smith, in her 13^th inning of work, made a heads up play to field a comebacker and get the runner at third.

DePaul would, however, pick up two more hits in the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Pirates would rally in the 13^th following a Smith walk and Hill double, but that would be all as they dropped game one of the series, 2-1.

Notes and Numbers

The 13 innings pitched is a career, single-game high for Smith while the 11 strikeouts was a season-best and just one off her career mark.
Caye, Smith, Hill and Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) all had multi-hit affairs for the Pirates with Hill picking up two doubles. The two doubles for Hill give her six during conference-play.
The Blue Demons outhit the Pirates 11-10.
Fourteen different players entered the game for the Pirates.
The Pirates moved to 14-14 on the season, 4-6 in the BIG EAST and 5-5 at home.
