Piscataway, N.J. - Freshman Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning, and junior Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) tossed her fourth consecutive complete game as the Seton Hall softball team rallied to top Rutgers, 5-3, in midweek, non-conference action Tuesday at Rutgers Softball Complex.

How It Happened
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fifth, the Pirates put up four runs to take the advantage for good. Freshman Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got it started with a double to the right-center gap. Five batters later, Blevins roped a two-run single to left that plated Caye and junior pinch-runner Taylor Soanes (Missouri City, Texas) and gave Pirates the lead. Freshman Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) followed with an RBI single to right to score freshman Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) and then Blevins herself scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.

Rutgers threatened in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. With runners on first and third, the Scarlet Knights attempted a rundown double steal, which successfully got the runner from third home, but the Pirates executed well enough to get the trail runner 2-6-3 for the second out. Smith then worked around a two-out single to escape and worked around a two-out walk in the seventh inning to seal the victory.

Notes and Numbers

Junior Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) went 3-for-3 on the day and is now 5-for-her-last 6 at the plate.
Caye, Soanes, Hill, Blevins and Gilbert all scored runs and Caye, Blevins and Gilbert were credited with RBIs.
Smith tossed her fourth straight complete game and 13th of the season. She gave up just one earned run on five hits and two walks in seven innings while fanning four batters. She now has a 7-10 record and lowered her season ERA to 2.68.
This was Seton Hall's first win over Rutgers since April 26, 2009. After Rutgers departed the BIG EAST in 2013, this was only the seventh non-conference matchup between the two squads.
The Pirates are now 15-16 on the season.
