3/23/2022 6:40:00 PM | Softball
Monmouth 9 – Seton Hall 1
How it Happened
- The Hawks were the first team on the scoreboard as they added a run in the first following a two-run RBI single.
- A leadoff double from Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa. ) followed by a single from Wingo had the Pirates' offense in a position to respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) would bring home the run to tie things at one.
- Monmouth would pick up three runs on a pair of singles in the third to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
- The Hawks would then add a run in both the fourth and fifth to grow the lead to five.
- Monmouth would grab three runs in the seventh to make it a final of 9-1.
How it Happened
- The Pirates' offense came out hot in game two with three runs in the home-half of the first. Back-to-back doubles from Caye and Wingo to start put the Pirates on the board before a Smith two-run home run capped off the three-run inning for The Hall.
- Monmouth would get a run back in the second, but the Pirates would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) would single as Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.) came on to pinch run. Arruda would steal second and the errant throw from the Monmouth catcher would go to the outfield wall allowing Arruda to score from second and make it a 4-1 game.
- The Hawks would add two in the third, but again the Pirates would match with two of their own. Wingo would lead things off with a solo shot to right, her first of the year. A Hill double, followed by an RBI single from Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas) would keep the Pirates' lead at three.
- Monmouth would tie things at six in the fourth with a pair of doubles in the inning.
- An RBI-single from Smith in the bottom of the fourth would put the Pirates back ahead, 7-6.
- Wingo would add an RBI-single in the sixth to secure an 8-6 final.
- Wingo would go 6-for-8 with a home run, three doubles and three RBIs between the two games. Wingo leads the team in average at .370 and doubles with nine two-baggers on the season.
- The homerun for Smith was her team-leading seventh of the year and third in five games. Smith also picked up the win for the Pirates in the circle, with 3.1 innings of perfect relief not allowing a baserunner while striking out five.
- Caye had her fifth, multi-hit affair in game two, picking up two doubles on the afternoon for her fifth and sixth of her freshman campaign.
- With the split, the Pirates moved to 11-11 on the season and 5-4 at Mike Sheppard, Sr., Field.
The Pirates will hit the road for their first road BIG EAST series of the season as they take on the Butler Bulldogs for three games starting on Friday.
