Villanova, Pa. – In the final match of the 2021 season, the Pirates came up just short at Villanova by a score of 1-0. The Pirates finished up the campaign with a 6-8-3 mark.
How it Happened
After a rather quiet first half that saw both teams register just three shots apiece, the Pirates came out as the aggressors in the second period piling up chances on the road. A particularly dangerous striking opportunity for the Pirates came in the 60th minute when Camil Koreichi (Paris, France) was able to get put a good strike on the ball from inside the Wildcat box but it was ultimately denied by the Villanova keeper.
The Pirates managed to outshoot the Wildcats 14-8 in the second half and generated six corners to Villanova's one.
Turning Point
Despite the disparity in attacking chances in the second half the Wildcats were the first team to breakthrough on the scoreboard. With time ticking down in the second half, Villanova was able to put together a nice piece of attacking play as Lyam Mackinnon sent a pass to Luke Poliano who was able to put a point-blank shot on net. Hannes Ronnholmen (Stockholm, Sweden) was up to the task and made a diving stop, however the rebound found Anthony Cousins, Jr., who corralled the ball and found the back of the net for the game-winner.
