Pirates Fall To Rutgers On Wednesday Afternoon
4/5/2017 7:29:00 PM | Softball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Back-to-back home runs in the second inning from Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) and Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) weren't enough for the Seton Hall softball team (16-14-1) in a 13-7 setback to Rutgers (10-24) on Wednesday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field. The Pirates finished with 11 hits in the setback, but committed five errors to lead to four unearned runs.
The home runs for Walkden and Fischer came in a three-second inning, as The Hall erased an early 3-0 hole with four in the first before taking a 7-3 edge in the second. Rutgers answered with multiple runs in each of the next four innings while hurler Whitney Jones kept the Pirates off the board over the final five frames. Overall, the teams combined for 28 hits and seven errors in the back-and-forth affair.
Turning Point
After Rutgers pulled within a run with three in the third, they posted another three-spot in the top of the fourth to take a 9-7 lead. The Hall threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with one away thanks to singles from Walkden, Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) and Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.). With the tying run in scoring positions, Jones got a pop-up and a ground ball to escape the jam and keep RU up two. The Scarlet Kngiths would go on to add runs in each of the next two innings to pad their lead.
