Walkden's Clutch Hit Powers Pirates To Series Win
4/2/2017 4:04:00 PM | Softball
CHICAGO – Trailing by a run and down to its final strike, the Seton Hall softball team (16-13-1, 3-3 BIG EAST) got a clutch bases-clearing double from Alexis Walkden in an eventual 7-6 victory over DePaul (15-15, 2-3) on Sunday at Cacciatore Stadium. The contest was the rubber match of a three-game set with the Blue Demons, giving The Hall its first BIG EAST series win of the year and first over DePaul since 2008.
Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) came up with her big knock after DePaul erased an early 4-0 Seton Hall lead, going up 5-4 with a four-run sixth inning. The junior standout finished 2-for-4 as one of six Pirates to post multi-hit efforts in a 15-hit attack. Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) and Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) both scored on the double and posted three-hit outings for the Pirates.
Turning Points
With the Pirates leading 4-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth, DePaul posted a four-run frame to pull ahead for the first time at 5-4. The Blue Demons sent nine to the plate and recorded six hits in the frame, including a game-tying single from Nicole Pihl before a go-ahead RBI knock from Megan Leyva.
In the top of the seventh, Arteaga and Ragen Reddick (Middlesex, N.J.) led off the frame with back-to-back singles before DePaul got the next two batters. With two away, Foster dropped in an infield single to load the bases for Walkden. On a 3-2 pitch, the junior smacked a bases-clearing double to the left-center field gap to put the Pirates back on top at 7-5.
DePaul pulled back within a run with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh before Madison Strunk (Adkins, Texas) retired the next three in order to close out the rubber game victory.
