The Hall and DePaul Split Doubleheader On Saturday
4/1/2017 5:30:00 PM | Softball
CHICAGO – The Seton Hall softball team (15-13-1, 2-3 BIG EAST) split a doubleheader with DePaul (15-14, 2-2 BIG EAST) in conference action on Saturday at Cacciatore Stadium. After a big offensive performance from The Hall in game one, DePaul took game two behind a complete game one-hitter. The series will conclude with a rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Pirates scored 10 runs on 14 hits in game one, getting four RBIs from Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) and three hits apiece from Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) and Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) at the top of the order. The triumph marked The Hall's first regular season victory at DePaul in eight seasons.
Game 1 Notes – Seton Hall 10, DePaul 5
- The Pirates took a big early lead, scoring in each of the first three innings to build a 6-0 advantage
- Included in the early frames was a four-run top of the second, with Peck delivering the big blow by way of a two-out bases-clearing double
- DePaul cut the lead to 6-2 and threatened with runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) came on out of the bullpen and retired the next three batters in order to escape the jam
- After run-scoring knocks from Peck and Head in the top of the sixth, DPU battled back and slimmed the lead again to 8-5 with three-straight doubles
- Foster and Walkden came through with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles in the top of the seventh for key insurance runs before Head stranded two more runners in the bottom of the seventh to close out the victory
- The top four hitters in the Seton Hall lineup (Foster, Walkden, Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) and Peck) combined to go 11-for-17 with seven runs scored and eight RBIs
- The Pirates, who entered the contest leading the nation with 2.0 doubles per game, tied a season-high with seven two-baggers in the win
- The Hall finished with a 14-10 edge in hits and did not commit an error compared to three for DPU
- Fischer nabbed the win in the circle, allowing two runs in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts
- The win was Seton Hall's first regular season triumph at DePaul since April 4, 2009
- Offenses on both sides were quiet through the early frames, with The Hall's Madison Strunk (Adkins, Texas) and DPU's Kennedy Garcia matching zeroes through three
- DePaul broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the fifth
- The Blue Demons held an 8-1 edge in hits and neither side committed an error
- Valerie Suto (Mercerville, N.J.) recorded The Hall's lone knock with a single in the sixth inning
- Freshman Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and fired 1.1 scoreless frames, striking out a pair
- Fischer drew three walks at the dish, reaching base safely in every plate appearance
- Walkden also drew a base on balls and has reached base in 10-straight contests
The Pirates and Blue Demons will conclude their three-game BIG EAST set tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. (ET) first pitch set to air on the BIG EAST Digital Network via the FOX Sports GO app.
