Julian Spindler Back on BIG EAST Honor Roll

NEW YORK - Seton Hall University sophomore goalkeeper Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) made a career-high seven saves in the Pirates' scoreless draw with No. 18 George Mason last Friday, an effort which has resulted in spot on the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced Monday by the league office.
It is the second time this season, and the third in his career, Spindler has landed on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll; he did so earlier this year after making five saves in a 2-0 shutout against UMass Lowell on Aug. 31.
While a stout team defensive effort aided in limiting the high scoring Patriots to only a few quality scoring chances, George Mason entered the game ranked eighth in the nation averaging 2.6 goals per game, it was a save by Spindler in the 102nd that saved the result for the home team.
George Mason's talented tandem of Timi Mulgrew and Henning Dirks orchestrated what could have been the game-winning score as Mulgrew beat a defender at midfield and found Dirks in space on the left side. Eventually Dirks placed a cross to Mulgrew in the area, 10-yards out from net, only to see Spindler go air born and block the shot with his foot, providing Bolu Akinyode (Lagos, Nigeria) the opportunity to swoop in and clear it away.
Mulgrew entered the game ranked third in the nation in goals (6) and points per game (2.8), but was limited to three shot attempts, one on net in 104 minutes of action.
Spindler now has a pair of shutouts to his credit this season and four in his career. It is the first time he has posted a clean sheet against a team ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Top-25 poll in six chances.
Seton Hall returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Monmouth University at Owen T. Carroll Field. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
