Goalkeeper Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) had a strong game behind the Pirates' defense. The sophomore made four saves and handled 11 URI corner kicks to preserve the tie. The Pirates were out-shot 23-to-11 in the match, but only six of the Rams' shots found the goal.
After 38 minutes of back-and-forth soccer, Rhode Island finally broke the scoreless tie. Matt Sykes passed to Mike Casey who found the back of the Pirates' net from the top of the box for the first score of the game. It would be the only score of the first half. The Rams out-shot the Pirates, 8-5, in the first 45 minutes, and had the only three shots on goal.
Senior Eric Megna (Hales Corners, Wis.) picked up the first yellow card of the season for Seton Hall in the 32nd minute. Yellow cards were 1-to-1 in the first half as Rhode Island's Falko Friedrichs was cited earlier in the half.
With time wearing thin, the Pirates' preseason hero, Kai Greene, continued his scoring exploits. Senior Victor Manosalvas (Clifton, N.J.) slipped a pass to Greene, who drove home the equalizer from eight yards away in the 77th minute.
In the first overtime period, the Pirates weren't able to get a shot off, while Rhode Island took four shots, but none were on goal. Defense continued to reign as the match went into double-overtime.
The only shot on goal registered in the second overtime came off the foot of Seton Hall's Kevin Matthews (Ambler, Pa.), but the shot was saved with just one second remaining in the match.
Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, August 31 for its home opener at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates will host UMass-Lowell with kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
