Pirates Stifled in Series Opener Against UConn

STORRS, CT. – In the opening game of the weekend series, the Seton Hall softball team (15-11, 5-2 BIG EAST) fell UConn (14-11, 3-1 BIG EAST), 7-0, after a stifling offensive performance at Burrill Family Field on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened
The Pirates opened the weekend series in a familiar fashion when Katey Brennan walked to get on base. Hannah Alexander collected a two-out walk of her own, but neither Pirate could score in the opening frame. When UConn stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first, the Huskies quickly lept out to a 1-0 lead by the end of the frame.
From that point on, the two teams' fates went on diverging paths. The Pirates continued to make contact with the ball, but it could not find any clear grass. UConn's defense stepped up, helping their pitcher retire 12 straight Pirates with only two of them striking out. Meanwhile, The Hall was suffering paper cut after paper cut when UConn stepped to the plate. Despite only registering one extra-base hit, the Huskies added another three runs to their tally to put The Hall down 4-0 through five.
The Pirates best offensive chance of the game came in the sixth inning when the top of the order loaded the bases with two outs. Despite the opportunity, a rolled grounder to third would end the inning. In the bottom of the frame UConn added on another three runs to make it a 7-0 deficit for the Pirates heading into the seventh inning.
With only three outs left between them and defeat, the Pirates needed to score seven runs to continue the game. With two runners on, The Hall flied out to end the game, resulting in a 7-0 loss to open the weekend.
