South Orange, N.J. — The Seton Hall baseball team broke a 4-4 tie with a seven-run bottom of the third inning and did not look back as the Pirates defeated Dartmouth, 17-7, in eight innings on Wednesday afternoon.
Aiden Robbins went 2-for-3 with four RBI, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances. Marco Ali drove in three runs and Ryan Frontera went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Connor Byrne earned the win on the mound for the Pirates tossing four innings of relief. Another strong relief performance came from Tomas Cestero, who struck out a career-high five batters in two innings of work
How It Happened
Both teams were scoreless in the first inning before Dartmouth scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. The Pirates responded in the home half of the frame with four runs. Casey Cumiskey got the scoring started with a single with the bases loaded that drove in a run. A sac fly from Ali and back-to-back walks gave the Pirates a 4-1 lead.
Dartmouth stayed hot and pushed across three runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game up at 4-4. However, the Pirates opened the floodgates with seven runs in the bottom half. It was Cumiskey who got things started again with an RBI double to right field that put The Hall back in front, 5-4. AJ Soldra kept the line moving with a pulled single through the right side that scored Tommy Manzo easily from third base. Another Seton Hall run came across on an error, Magnus Krieger and Frontera delivered run-scoring base hits before a run scored on a wild pitch that gave the Pirates a commanding 11-4 lead.
Byrne retired the side in the top of the fourth and worked around a two-out base hit in the fifth to toss another scoreless frame. In the home half of the fifth, the Pirates added four more runs to their tally all with two outs, starting with a two-run single from Ali and followed by a two RBI triple off the bat of Robbins.Â
With the The Hall leading 15-4 after five, Dartmouth chipped away at the deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth inning that made it 15-7 in favor of the Pirates. Byrne prevented further damage in the sixth and Cestero came on to relief him in the top of the seventh. Cestero recorded two strikeouts in his first inning of work before striking out the side in the top of the eighth. The Seton Hall offense was able to tack on a run in the seventh and the game-winning run in the eighth that secured the run-rule victory.
