Omaha, Neb. — Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI and Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) posted his fourth mutli-performance in the last five games but it wasn't enough as Creighton defeated Seton Hall, 10-5, on Friday night at Charles Schwab Field.
Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) had thrown three scoreless innings in his 13th start of the season before a tough fourth inning that saw Creighton tie up the score at 3-3. Gabe Cavazzoni (Wall, N.J.) picked up his first-career RBI in the loss.
How It Happened
The Pirates struck first with Sylvester serving as the catalyst. Robbins worked a one-out walk and stole his 10th bag of the season to put a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Sylvester dropped a base hit into right field that was enough to score Robbins and give The Hall an early 1-0 lead.
Hansen retired the first six batters he faced and was able to work around trouble in the third inning that maintained the lead. In the top of the fourth, Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) reached on a single and Cole Zak (Cleveland, Ohio) followed with a walk. Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) moved both runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and Frankie Scrivanic (Tinton Falls, N.J.) drove in the game's second run on an RBI groundout that plated Pokrovsky from third. Cavazzoni was the next batter with two outs and he lifted a ball to right field that found grass and it scored Zak to extend Seton Hall's lead to 3-0.
Creighton was able to chase Hansen after cutting its deficit to one, 3-2. Following a pitching change, the Bluejays knotted up the score at 3-3 with a two-out double. A four-run fifth inning extended their lead to 7-3 before the Bluejays tacked on two more runs in the sixth that made it 9-3. Sylvester's fifth home run of the season that led off the top of the eighth cut into the deficit and made it 9-4 but Creighton answered with another run in the home half of the eighth inning that pushed its lead to 10-4. Despite an RBI single off the bat of Robbins in the top of the niinth, it wasn't enough to start a sustained rally.
