South Orange, N.J. - Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 and Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) reached base three times in five plate appearances but Rutgers came out on top as the Scarlet Knights defeated Seton Hall, 8-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
Alex D'Ambrosio (Marlboro, N.J.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Pirates (17-15) and Jayson Torres (East Islip, N.Y.) struck out two and allowed just one run in a two-inning start.
How It Happened
Seton Hall was successful in getting runners on in the first two innings as six runners Pirates reached base. The Pirates even loaded the bases in the second but they were unable to manufacture a run. Rutgers got on the board in the top of the second on an RBI single but D'Ambrosio entered in the top of the third and blanked the Scarlet Knight for two innings.
A bases-clearing, one-out triple in the top of the fifth inning extended Rutgers' lead to 4-0 before the Pirates were able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Hack led off the inning with an infield single and swiped second base to move into scoring position. With two outs, Sylvester stepped to the plate rocketed a double to center field that scored Hack and cut the Pirates' deficit to three, 4-1.
Nate Espelin (Belmont, Mass.) came on in the top of the sixth and he retired the side in order. After allowing a lead-off single in the seventh, he was lifted before the Scarlet Knights pushed three runs across on a three-run home run that made it 8-1 and put the game out reach.
