Hansen's Strong Start Not Enough In Loss To Villanova, 3-0

South Orange, N.J. - Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) threw seven innings, including 6.1 no-hit frames, with six strikeouts and Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) went 2-for-4 but it wasn't enough as Seton Hall fell to Villanova on Sunday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
Hansen has gone at least six innings in his last two starts and has recorded at least six strikeouts in both appearances. Jay Allmer (Asheville, N.C.) fanned three batters in two innings of relief. The Pirates (17-18, 1-5 BIG EAST) were plagued by seven runners left on base.
How It Happened
Hansen started off hot as he retired the first nine batters he faced with three strikeouts. Seton Hall tallied the first hit of the game when D'Amico singled through the left side of the infield to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Frankie Scravanic (Tintin Falls, N.J.) followed with a base hit of his own that gave the Pirates runners on first and second with no one out. Despite a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) that moved both runners into scoring position, The Hall couldn't capitalize and the game remained scoreless entering the fourth.
Villanova got its first base runner of the game on a two-out walk in the top half of the fourth but the Wildcats left the runner stranded at third base. Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a base hit and he later found himself on third but the Pirates couldn't drive him in. Both sides were retired in order in the fifth before Villanova got on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout that gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
The Wildcats pushed across runs in the seventh and eighth innings that made it 3-0 as the Pirate offense continued to be plagued by runners left on base all game. Seton Hall left two runners on in the seventh and a runner each in the eighth and ninth innings.
Up Next
Seton Hall will be back in action on Tuesday when the Pirates travel to Staten Island to take on Wagner at 7 p.m.
