Staten Island, N.Y. - Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) came up with the game-winning hit in the top of the 11th inning following a solid relief performance from Nate Espelin (Belmont, Mass.) as Seton Hall defeated Wagner in midweek action, 4-3, on Tuesday evening.
Espelin earned his second win of the season after tossing 3.1 shutout innings with two strikeouts and Jay Allmer (Asheville, N.C.) picked up his fourth save of the season for the Pirates (18-18). Starter Jayson Torres (East Islip, N.Y.) went a career-best 4.2 innings and struck out a career-high five batters
Sylvester had two RBI including the go-ahead RBI double in extra innings. Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) went 2-for-5 with a home run, Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with two doubles from the lead-off spot and Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) went 2-for-5 with a triple, a double and a run scored.
How It Happened
Robbins got the evening started the right way for Seton Hall as he hit second home run of the season over the left center field fence that gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead. After Torres worked his second straight scoreless frame that featured a strikeout and a pick-off at first that ended the inning, Sylvester scored Hack on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning that extended Seton Hall's lead to 2-0.
Melnick led off the to of the fourth inning with a triple down the right field line. The next batter was Pat D'Amico (Lynnfied, Mass.) who punched a ground ball to the right side of the infield that allowed Melnick to score and made the score 3-0 Pirates.
Wagner pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth and was threatening with two runners on and two outs when Alex D'Ambrosio (Marlboro, N.J.) came out of the bullpen and recorded a strikeout that ended the inning. D'Ambrosio struck out two more Seahawks in a scoreless sixth inning that kept the score at 3-1 in favor of the Pirates when he ran into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh. The Seahawks knotted up the score at 3-3 and it stayed that way until the 11th inning where Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) reached on a lead-off single to right field. He moved to second on a sac bunt by Hack and with two outs, Sylvester delivered with a double to left center field that scored Luders easily and put the Pirates in front, 4-3.
