South Orange, N.J. -Â Freshman Anthony Ehly (Glenside, Pa.) held Manhattan hitless through the first five innings and the Seton Hall offense churned out 14 runs to match its season high as the Pirates soundly defeated the Jaspers, 14-3, at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Seven Seton Hall batters had multi-hit games, led by graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) who went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with a game-high three runs scored and four RBI. Ehly earned his first career decision after going 5.1 innings and Pirates pitching allowed only three walks.
THE GAME:
The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double from redshirt junior Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and an RBI single from Clyde. Two more runs came across in the fourth as redshirt junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) plated a run on a sacrifice fly and sophomore Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) registered a run scoring single.
Clyde picked up his second RBI of the day in the fifth that gave the Pirates a 5-0 lead but the Jaspers started to chip away at the deficit. Manhattan plated a run in the sixth and two in the top of the seventh on a two-run triple that made it a two-run ball game, 5-3. Viera answered the Jaspers' comeback with a three-run blast that sailed over the left center field fence that pushed Seton Hall's lead up to five, 8-3.
The floodgates opened in the eighth as the Pirates' offense tacked on six runs in the home half of the eighth that made it a 14-3 ballgame. Junior Richie Cimpric (Bayport, N.Y.) finished the game on the mound and tossed a scoreless ninth.
