Pirates Claim Series at PC With Extra Innings Win
4/20/2019 1:13:00 PM | Softball
Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas) was in the thick of the Pirate offense throughout the day, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Allender gave the Pirates a fifth inning lead and then tied the game with a clutch knock in the seventh. Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) also came up big and delivered the go-ahead blow for the Pirates with an RBI single in the top of the eighth. The timely hitting from Allender and Arteaga backed a tremendous 5.0 inning relief outing for Madison Strunk (Adkins, Texas) who picked up her second win of the series in the circle.
How it Happened
- The Hall got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out RBI single from Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) to take a 1-0 lead
- The Pirates added to their advantage in the top of the third when Allender doubled and came home to score on a Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) sac fly
- In the bottom of the third PC pulled even with a two-run home run to level the score at 2-2
- Allender put the Pirates back ahead in the top of the fifth, lining a solo home run to left
- The Friars then re-took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of error to score two unearned runs and go up 4-3
- Allender again came up clutch in the top of the seventh, punching an RBI single up the middle to tie the game
- With runners on first and second and no outs, PC limited damage by turning an unconventional double play after a pop up to the edge of the infield was dropped by the shortstop
- The Friars then put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a lineout to short saw the runner on third doubled up to send the game to extras
- In the top of the eighth the Pirates used three-straight two-out singles, capped by a go-ahed RBI knock from Arteaga, to take a 5-4 lead
- Strunk was able to close the game out in the bottom of the eighth, stranding a potential tying run on base with a lineout to end the contest
- The Pirates recorded an 11-8 edge in hits, but committed four errors versus one for PC
- The contest was played three hours earlier than its original start time due to weather in the area and featured a 40-minute delay in the bottom of the first
- Allender, Arteaga, Pandolfo and Briana Wallace (Fort Worth, Texas) all had multi-hit games
- Strunk's final line saw the senior toss 5.0 innings of four-hit ball, allowing two unearned runs and walking three with three strikeouts
- Allender's fifth inning home run was her team-high seventh of the season
- The Hall improves to 33-30 all-time against Providence, with 14 of the last 17 meetings now decided by two runs or less
- Seton Hall has won three of its five BIG EAST series this season, only dropping series to first-place St. John's and an abbreviated set to second-place DePaul
What's Next
The Hall will close its regular season non-conference slate on Wednesday, April 24 with a doubleheader against Lehigh scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
