Arteaga Homers Twice, Pirates Win Wild Series Opener
4/13/2018 5:48:00 PM | Softball
Arteaga reached base all four times in the win and hit two of The Hall's three home runs, a solo shot and a three-run blast. Payton Beaver (Lake Stevens, Wash.) also rocked a three-run home run for the Pirates and Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) knocked in two runs.
How it Happened
- The Hall burst out to an early lead, opening the game with back-to-back walks before Arteaga launched a three-run home run deep to left
- Arteaga went yard again in the top of the third, a solo shot to dead center that gave The Hall a 4-1 advantage
- The Red Storm got a pair back in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the lead to 4-3 before a diving catch in left from Arteaga limited further damage
- The Pirates responded emphatically in the top of the fifth, putting up five runs highlighted by Beaver's three-run home run and a two-run double for Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.)
- In seesaw fashion, St. John's answered The Hall's five-run frame with one of their own to pull back within a run at 9-8 after five innings
- Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) entered in the circle during the fifth and put together a 1-2-3 sixth before closing a nine-out save with Arteaga's clutch catch in the seventh
- The Hall's win came despite being out-hit 12-8 and committing all four of the game's errors
- Arteaga finished her huge day 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, four RBIs and three runs
- The Pirates drew seven walks, while Madison Strunk and Camp combined to issue only one
- Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) and Emily Supercynski (Aurora, Colo.) both drew two walks
- The win for The Hall was its first over St. John's since 2014, snapping an 11-game skid in the rivalry series
- Arteaga's home runs were her fifth and sixth of the year, second on the squad
- The sophomore now has a team-high 29 RBIs, moving into second in the BIG EAST
- The multi-home run game was the second of the year for a Pirate, with Alexis Walkden also going yard twice against Fairfield on March 27
- In 10 league games, Arteaga is hitting .367 with three home runs and 15 RBIs
- Beaver's home run was her second of the year and she notched her 20th RBI
- Baylee Allender (Rosharon, Texas) recorded her first multi-hit game of BIG EAST play
- Camp notched her second save of the season, allowing an earned run in 3.0 innings
The Pirates and Red Storm will conclude their three-game series tomorrow afternoon, playing a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
