Pirates Rally Late But Fall At Providence
4/22/2017 8:20:00 PM | Softball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Seton Hall softball team (20-19-1, 5-8 BIG EAST) scored seven times in the final three innings but fell just short in an 8-7 setback at Providence (16-22, 4-9 BIG EAST) on Saturday at Glay Field. The Pirates scored five times in the fifth inning and twice in the seventh before their late rally fell just short.
The Hall fell into an early 6-0 hole but bounced back emphatically to pull within a run twice in the latter stages of the contest. In a balanced offensive effort, eight Pirates recorded a hit and all nine starters notched either an RBI or a run scored. Saturday was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, but rain pushed the start time back from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the doubleheader was switched to Sunday
Turning Points
In the top of the first, Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) led off with a single and Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) added a one-out knock to put runners on the corners. The Friars were able to escape the early jam and strand both runners, getting the four and five hitters in the Pirate order to strike out and ground out.
In the bottom of the frame, Providence pushed two across with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. That 2-0 lead was all either side would score until the bottom of the fourth when the Friars added four more (three unearned) to swell their lead to 6-0. The Hall answered in the top of the fifth with five runs, including a two-run single from Foster and an RBI double from Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) to cut the lead back to one.
The Friars got two back in the bottom of the fifth, taking an 8-5 lead to the seventh. The Hall rallied in the final frame by loading the bases with one away before a two-run double from Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.). With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position and one away, PC got a strikeout and fly ball to thwart the threat and hold on to a one-run win.
