4/23/2017 4:13:00 PM | Softball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Seton Hall softball team (21-20-1, 6-9 BIG EAST) split a conference doubleheader at Providence (17-23, 5-10 BIG EAST) on Sunday at Glay Field. After falling by a score of 4-2 in game one to drop the series, The Hall salvaged a game in the set with a 4-3 comeback win in game two.
Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) drove in both runs during the game one setback, coming on a two-run single in the fifth inning. In game two a late RBI single from Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) gave The Hall its first lead which held up thanks to a strong pitching performance from Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.).
Game 1 – Providence 4, Seton Hall 2
How it Happened
- The Friars jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning and adding a run in the bottom of the third to build a 3-0 edge
- Walkden cut into the PC lead in the top of the fifth, lacing a single to left with two outs and the bases loaded to make it a 3-2 game
- The Friars added a run in the bottom of the sixth and kept the Pirates off the board over the final two frames to secure the win
- The Friars held a 7-4 edge in hits and committed the game's lone error
- Four different Pirates recorded a base hit, all singles
- With a first inning stolen base, Walkden improved to 10-for-10 on the basepaths this season
- The steal made Walkden the first player in program history to have double-digit home runs and double-digit stolen bases in the same season
- Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) was solid in a relief appearance in the circle, allowing one run and only one hit over 3.2 innings
Game 2 – Seton Hall 4, Providence 3
How it Happened
- The Hall got on the board in the top of the second, with Brianna Wallace (Fort Worth, Texas) stealing a base and scoring on a wild pitch after coming on as a pinch-runner
- The Pirates erased one-run PC leads in back-to-back frames during the middle innings, using an RBI double from Noel Lent (Yaphank, N.Y.) in the fourth and a sacrifice fly from Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) in the fifth to make it 3-3
- Foster gave The Hall its first lead in the top of the sixth with a two-out RBI single
- That 4-3 lead held up behind Camp, who retired nine of the last 10 batters she faced
- The Pirates held a 7-5 edge in hits but committed four errors to lead to three PC unearned runs
- Camp went 7.0 innings and allowed no earned runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts
- The win improved Camp to 7-5 on the year and lowered her ERA to 2.79 in her freshman season
- Valerie Suto (Mercerville, N.J.) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored
- Suto swiped two bases and now has a team-high 15 stolen bases this season
- The Hall finished with a season-high six stolen bases as a team
- Foster has recorded a hit in each of her last 10 conference games
- Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) drew her 36th walk of the year in the seventh inning, tying the single-season program record set by Walkden last season
The Pirates are back in New England on Wednesday for their final regular season non-conference contest of the season, visiting Fairfield in a midweek match-up.
