Pirates Drop Game One, Win In Halted Game Two
3/9/2017 10:57:00 PM | Softball
DAVIS, Calif. – The Seton Hall softball team (8-6-1) went to extra innings twice on day one of the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis. After falling 6-5 to San Jose State in eight innings in game one on Thursday, The Hall took a 5-1 lead in the eighth against the host Aggies before the contest was halted due to darkness, before The Hall closed out a 5-3 win on Friday night.
The contests are the second and third straight extra inning affairs for The Hall, with the latter being the second in three games affected by darkness. The Pirates played Sacramento State to a 2-2 tie due to lack of light after 10 innings on Tuesday.
Game 1 Notes – San Jose State 6, Seton Hall 5 (Eight Innings)
- The Pirates jumped out to an early lead, cashing in with two-run doubles from Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) to take a 2-0 lead
- After the Spartans pulled within two in the top of the fourth, The Hall answered in the bottom of the frame with squeeze bunt from Brianna Wallace (Fort Worth, Texas) to go up 5-2
- SJSU added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull even and send the contest to extras, where it took a 6-5 lead with an eventual game-winning sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth
- Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) had two of The Hall's six hits, as the Pirates were out-hit 11-6
- The Hall left 11 runners on base compared to six for SJSU
- The Hall's Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) and UCD's Katie Kibby dueled in the circle, with both teams trading zeroes until the Pirates broke through with a sacrifice fly in the fifth
- Head was a strike away from working around a leadoff triple in the bottom of the seventh and completing a 1-0 shutout, but UC Davis drew an illegal pitch to score and level the contest at 1-1
- The Hall answered in a big way in the top of the eighth, scoring four times with the bases loaded and two away before the contest was halted due to darkness
- After a sac fly from Peck, Noel Lent (Yaphank, N.Y.) came through with a two-run double to give The Hall some cushion
- At the time of the stoppage, Head has dealt 7.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts
- UC Davis scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, but the Pirates were able to hang on.
- Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) is 3-for-4 with a double and a run from the leadoff spot, while Arteaga and Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) have both turned in multi-hit efforts
The Pirates continue play at the Aggie Invitational with a 12 p.m. (ET) start against Iowa State on Friday.
