Pirates Blanked By Iowa State At Aggie Invitational
3/10/2017 2:07:00 PM | Softball
DAVIS, Calif. – The Seton Hall softball team (8-7-1) was blanked by Iowa State on Friday, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Cyclones on day two of the Aggie Invitational I hosted by UC Davis. The Hall will have two full games remaining at the tournament on Saturday along with the conclusion of a game halted on Thursday night, to be completed later today.
The Pirates mustered only one hit in the setback, as ISU hurler Brianna Weilbacher spun a complete game shutout with three walks and 14 strikeouts. Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) had a solid performance in the circle to keep pace for The Hall, but allowed single runs in the third and fourth innings that were all ISU needed.
Turning Point
The Hall brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventhIns down 2-0 after Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) drew a leadoff walk. Weilbacher induced a fielder's choice for the first out, then recorded her 13th and 14th strikeouts of the day to strand a runner on and seal the win for ISU.
Inside The Numbers
- The Hall was out-hit 8-1 in the setback, with each team committing one error
- The Pirates drew three walks and issued only one
- Iowa State went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while The Hall went 0-for-2
- Fischer fired a 6.0 inning complete game with three strikeouts against one walk
- Valerie Suto (Mercerville, N.J.) recorded The Hall's lone hit, a single in the second inning
- Fischer, Peck and Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) all drew walks for The Hall
- The complete game for Fischer was her third this season and the 13th of her career
- The contest was The Hall's first against a member of the Big 12 since facing Texas Tech on March 15, 2013
The Pirates will complete a halted game against UC Davis later on Friday, tentatively schedule for 8:30 p.m. (ET). The contest will resume with the Pirates up 5-1 with the bases loaded and two away in the top of the eighth inning. The Hall concludes play at the Aggie Invitational against UMass and Iowa State on Saturday.
