Pirates Conclude Trip With Pair of Tight Setbacks

DAVIS, Calif. – The Seton Hall softball team (9-9-1) dropped a pair of one-run decisions in its final day of play at the Aggie Invitational on Saturday. The Hall fell by a score of 6-5 to Iowa State in game one of the day before a 1-0 setback in a pitcher's duel with UMass to close the tournament. The two contests marked the conclusion of an 11-game spring break trip for the Pirates.
The two narrow setbacks dropped the Pirates to 1-4 in the Aggie Invitational hosted by UC Davis, with the four losses coming by a combined five runs. For the entirety of the spring break trip the Pirates finished 3-7-1.
Game 1 Notes – Iowa State 6, Seton Hall 5
- Both sides traded zeroes over the early innings, before the Cyclones broke through with a run on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth
- The Hall answered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on a Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) RBI double and a two-run home run from Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.)
- The Pirates held a 4-2 lead going into the final inning, but ISU struck four four runs in the top of the seventh to take a two-run lead
- Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) clubbed a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to pull back within one, but the Pirates couldn't scratch across a tying run
- Both sides finished with six hits, while ISU did not record an error compared to three for SHU
- Alannah Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) got the start in the circle and fired a career-high 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts
- Fischer's home run was her third of the season and first since notching a pair in The Hall's opening weekend
- The long ball for Walkden was her team-high fifth this season and the 33rd of her career, two shy of second place in program history
- Of Walkden's 23 hits this season, 16 have been for extra-bases
- The Pirates finished with three doubles, one each for Foster, Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Destini Peck
- In a classic pitcher's duel, The Hall's Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) and UMass' Candace Denis combined to allow only four hits in a contest that took a mere 77 minutes
- UMass scored the game's lone run with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth
- The Minutewomen held a 3-1 edge in hits, with Foster notching a third-inning single for The Hall's lone knock
- Camp finished with a 6.0 inning complete game, allowing a run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts
- Fischer drew a pair of walks for the Pirates and leads The Hall with 21 bases on balls and a .521 on-base percentage this season
