Pirates Tie After 10 Innings At Sacramento State
3/7/2017 9:15:00 PM | Softball
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For the first time in eight years, the Seton Hall softball team (8-5-1-) played to a tie, ending a 10-inning affair with Sacramento State (4-7-1) with a score of 2-2 on Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. The extra-inning contest was called after 10 due to darkness.
After both teams scored in the opening inning, the two sides traded zeroes until runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth kept the contest tied. Neither team could scratch across a winning run in the seventh inning or three extra inning frames before ending in a draw.
Turning Point
The Hornets broke a 1-1 deadlock in the bottom of the fifth, using a two-out double before an RBI single to pull ahead. The Hall answered in the next half inning when Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) came through with a two-out RBI single to bring home Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.).
In the bottom of the seventh Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) came on for The Hall to start a brilliant four-inning relief outing. In the 10th inning The Hall put the go-ahead run on third base, but a lineout ended the threat. Sacramento State nearly answered by putting the potential winning run on board in the bottom of the frame before Camp spun a game-ending double-play ball.
Inside The Numbers
- The Hornets held a slight 9-7 edge in hits and committed both of the game's two errors
- Pirate hitters drew seven walks, while The Hall's pitching staff issued only one
- Walkden finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run
- Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) got the start in the circle and fired 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts
- Camp tossed the final four scoreless frames, giving up two hits with three strikeouts and no walks
- The Pirates were a perfect 4-for-4 on the basepaths with four different base-stealers
- The Hall left 12 runners on base compared to eight for Sacramento State
- Walkden's two doubles give her nine this season and 30 for her career, moving past Brittany Hammer (2010-13) into eighth in program history
- The tie for The Hall was the ninth in program history and first since a 3-3 draw in six innings at Monmouth on April 1, 2009
- The Pirates are now 2-3-1 at the midway point of an 11-game spring break trip
- Foster and Walkden combined for five of The Hall's seven hits and scored both runs
The Pirates continue their spring break trip in the Golden State, heading to UC Davis to take part in the Aggie Invitational I. The Hall will take on San Jose State, UC Davis, Iowa State and UMass in five games over three days from March 8-11.
