The Hall Drops Wild Contest To East Carolina

STOCKTON, Calif. – In a wild back-and-forth, home run-filled affair the Seton Hall softball team (8-5) dropped a 15-14 decision to East Carolina (11-8) on Sunday in its final game at the 2017 Louisville Slugger Tournament hosted by Pacific. The Hall finishes the tournament with a 2-3 record after completing the first leg of an 11-game spring break trip.
The Hall rallied back from early deficits of 6-0 and 10-4, going ahead for the first time with four runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-10 lead. After adding a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, East Carolina answered with five in the bottom of the frame including a three-run walk-off home run.
The two sides combined for nine home runs in the contest, with The Hall tying a program-record with five long balls. Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) and Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) both racked up three hits and five RBIs, while Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) had four hits and joined Arteaga and Head in going yard. Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) was the fourth SHU Pirate to record a long ball in the contest and drew three walks leading to three runs scored.
Turning Point
Down 10-8 heading into the sixth inning, The Hall took its first lead of the game with a four-run frame. Arteaga got the scoring started with an RBI single to plate Walkden, before Head clubbed her second home run of the game to bring home three runs and give The Hall a 12-10 lead. Seton Hall added two more in the top of the seventh, with Walkden smacking a solo home run and Arteaga adding another RBI single.
East Carolina found an answer in the bottom of the frame, opening the inning with a solo home run before an RBI single cut the lead to 14-12. Later in the frame, Karlie Smith connecting on a three-run home run to seal it for ECU.
Inside The Numbers
- East Carolina held a 16-12 edge in hits and committed one error compared to three for SHU
- Seton Hall notched nine two-out RBIs and hit .455 (5-for-11) with runners in scoring position
