Pirates Sweep Two Games At ECU Pirate Invitational
2/25/2017 2:08:00 PM | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Seton Hall softball team (5-2) bounced back from its first setbacks of the season in a big way, sweeping two games against Virginia (6-7) and Coppin State (1-9) on Saturday at the ECU Softball Stadium.
The Pirates opened the day with their first win over an ACC foe in four seasons, taking down Virginia behind the bat of Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.) and the arm of Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas). The Hall followed that up with a 10-1 win in five innings over Coppin State to even their record at 2-2 in the ECU Pirate Invitational.
Game 1 Notes – Seton Hall 4, Virginia 2
- Virginia took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second, before The Hall answered with three runs in the top of the third
- Pandofo launched a two-run shot to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead in the frame and Katherine Matthys (Spring Branch, Texas) tacked on another run with an RBI groundout
- Pandolfo's long ball was the second of the freshman's career
- Matthys' RBI marked the first of her career
- After Virginia slimmed the lead to 3-2, Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) alertly took home on the back-end of an attempted double-steal to push the lead back to two in the top of the sixth
- Head came on in relief in the third inning and fired 5.0 frames, not allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks
- The Pirates held a 9-5 edge in hits, while each team committed one error
- Pandolfo and Alyssa Prukop (Coto de Caza, Calif.) both recorded multi-hit efforts for The Hall
- Walkden finished 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run
- The victory for The Hall was the first over a current member of the ACC since defeating Syracuse in the 2013 season and the first over an active ACC member since defeating Maryland, also in 2013
- The Hall scored three runs in the first inning with a two-run double from Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) and an RBI single from Prukop to take an early lead
- After the two sides traded runs in the second, the bats remained quiet until The Hall exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth to put the run-rule in play
- Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) spun a one-hitter in the circle, firing a five-inning complete game and retiring the last 10 batters she faced
- Fischer didn't walk a batter and struck out one, allowing one unearned run in the win
- At the dish, the senior added an RBI double and scored twice
- The freshman duo of Arteaga and Pandolfo combined to go 4-for-6 with five RBIs, two doubles and four runs scores
- Fischer, Walkden and Pandolfo have all reached base safely in each of The Hall's seven games this season
- Through the first seven games of her collegiate career, Pandolfo is batting .619 with five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs
- The victory was The Hall's fourth of the season to come via the run-rule
The Pirates conclude their run at the ECU Pirate Invitational on Sunday morning, taking on Virginia Tech at 9:30 a.m.
