SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) had a game-high 14 points, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team was outlasted by St. John's, 59-56, on Senior Day in Walsh Gymnasium, Sunday.
Â
After a solid-shooting first quarter, the Pirates shot only 26.5 percent from the floor and were just 2-fo-13 from three-point range over the final three quarters.Â

Codio had a game-high 14 points with four rebounds. Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) and Ari Woodard (Oviedo, Fla.) also reached double-figures in scoring. Catalon had 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Woodard had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Â
Graduate student Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) had seven points, a team-high 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Â
THE STORY:
An early 7-0 burst by St. John's gave them a 9-4 lead, but The Hall tied the game with a made three-pointer by Codio and a layup by Catalon with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Both teams shot at least 44 percent from the field and the game was tied at 19 after the first 10 minutes.
Â
A three-point play by Catalon gave The Hall a 22-19 lead, but then the Pirates' offense went scoreless for the next 6:19. In that time, St. John's went on a 9-0 run to grab a 28-22 advantage. After a hot-shooting first quarter, the Pirates were just 2-for-16 in the second and took a 32-26 deficit into the locker room.
Â
St. John's hit a three-pointer to open the third quarter and give them their largest lead of the game, 35-26, but The Hall responded with an 11-2 run, and a layup by Valenzuela tied the game at 37 with 5:32 left in the third. The Pirates out-scored the Red Storm, 15-to-10, in the third and trailed by just one, 42-41, entering the fourth quarter.
Â
A layup by Codio gave The Hall a 52-49 lead with 5:24 left to play, but the Red Storm answered with a 6-0 spurt to grab a 55-52 advantage with 2:25 to go. Seton Hall scored on back-to-back possessions, and a jumper by Codio with 1:04 left gave it a 56-55 lead. A disputed shooting foul called on Catalon with 33 seconds left put St. John's Shaulana Wagner on the line. Despite the Red Storm shooting just 9-for-18 from the free-throw line for the game, Wagner made both to give St. John's the lead. The Pirates had two possessions down two in the final half minute, but both shot attempts were well contested. Down three, Codio got a potential game-tying three-pointer off at the buzzer, but it fell short.
