
Pirates Defense Dominates Marquette Late, 70-58

The Hall holds the Golden Eagles without a field goal for the final 7:22 of the game.
MILWAUKEE, WIS. – Zahara Bishop (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) combined for 39 points and the Seton Hall women's basketball team held Marquette without a made field goal for the final 7:22 in a 70-58 victory on Wednesday.
Seton Hall used a 12-0 run to close the third quarter to grab its first lead since the start of the game and fuel a huge second half that saw the Pirates dominate Marquette on the glass. For the game, the Pirates won the rebounding battle, 44-to-26.
Bishop came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points on an efficient 6-for-9 shooting. Valenzuela had 19 points on the strength of 5-for-10 shooting from three-point range.
Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Ja'Kahla Craft (Elk River, Minn.) finished with seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
THE STORY:
Seton Hall scored seven of the first nine points of the game, but Marquette bounced back, and 9-2 run gave them a 15-12 lead with 2:56 left in the opening quarter. A bucket by Bishop cut The Hall's deficit to 19-17, but Marquette scored four points in the final minute to send the Golden Eagles into the second quarter up, 23-17.
A made three-pointer by Valenzuela cut The Hall's deficit to 32-30 with 3:33 left before halftime, but the Golden Eagles immediately answered with eight of the next 10 points to grab a 38-32 advantage with just under two minutes left in the first half. A pull-up jumper by Bishop with seconds left in the half made the score Marquette 40, Pirates 36, at the break. Both teams shot better than 46 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes with the Golden Eagles firing at a 55.2 percent clip.
A driving layup by Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) cut The Hall's deficit to two, 42-40, with 7:59 left in the third quarter, but Marquette responded with a quick 5-0 burst to grab a 47-40 advantage and force Seton Hall to take its first timeout. Trailing 49-42, The Hall closed out the third quarter with a 12-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers on back-to-back possessions by Catalon and Valenzuela, to grab a 54-49 lead.
A made jumper by Bishop with 7:28 left gave The Hall a 61-52 advantage. Marquette quickly got four points back to cut their deficit to five, but Seton Hall's defense then held Marquette scoreless for the next 6:18 and built a 68-56 lead. The Hall was able to ice the game on the free-throw line.

Seton Hall will be back in action on Saturday, February 14 when it returns to historic Walsh Gymnasium to host BIG EAST rival DePaul. Tip-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. It will be streamed live on ESPN+.
