INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) erupted for a career-high 27 points, but the injury-depleted Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to Butler, 62-55, in the regular season finale on Sunday.
Â
Despite the loss, with St. John's loss to top-ranked UConn tonight, The Hall clinches the No. 3 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. The Hall will play the winner of the game between No. 6 seeded St. John's and No. 11 seeded Xavier in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 7 at 9:30 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Â
Seton Hall's bad-luck, injury-plagued season continued on Sunday as All-BIG EAST guard Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) took a shot to the face late in the first quarter and didn't return.
Â
Codio nearly willed The Hall to victory, scoring 20 of her game-high 27 points in the second half. For the game, she was 12-for-22 from the floor and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) was the only other Pirate to reach double-figures in scoring. She had 13 points and five rebounds.
Â
THE STORY:
Butler entered the game averaging 6.1 made three-pointers per game, but had six in the first half alone. A made three-pointer by Valenzuela cut The Hall's deficit to just one with 4:40 left in the first half, but Butler closed the second quarter with a 9-2 run to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room at the half. The Hall's defense, which started strong, ended up allowing the Bulldogs to shoot 51.9 percent from the field in the first half.Â
Â
The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 42-28, with 8:34 to go. That's when Seton Hall, and particularly Codio, roared to life. The Hall closed the quarter with a 15-5 run, including 12 points from Codio to cut its deficit to just four points after three quarters.
Â
In the fourth, The Hall cut Butler's lead to two points on three occasions, but the Bulldogs always had an answer. A layup by Codio cut The Hall's deficit to just 53-51 with 3:18 left in the game, but it was the closest the Pirates would get. A layup by Valenzuela with 2:47 left again cut Seton Hall's deficit to one possession, 56-53, but Butler's Mallory Miller answered with a three-pointer to break the game open late.
Â
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will begin postseason play on Saturday, March 7 when the third-seeded Pirates face the winner of No. 6 seeded St. John's or No. 11 seeded Xavier in the quarterfinals of the 2026 BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena. Tip-time is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. It will be streamed live on Peacock and simulcast on NBCSN.
