AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's will meet for the second time in 15 days this season with the Pirates looking to avoid a season sweep. The Red Storm have a 51-41 all-time series lead, but The Hall has won six of the last eight games in the series. The Pirates have won the last five games against St. John's in Walsh Gym.
Â
EARLIER THIS YEAR AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
Graduate student Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) had a team-high 17 points, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 67-61, in Queens on Feb. 7.
Â
After a most-even first half, St. John's shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half, which included 6-for-9 shooting from three-point range. Seton Hall was able to turn the Red Storm over 23 times, but was beaten badly on the glass, 42-23.
Â
Valenzuela finished with a team-best 17 points on the strength of 4-for-8 shooting from three-point range. Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) added 13 points, three assists and three steals. Sophomore Ja'Kahla Craft (Elk River, Minn.), making her first collegiate start, had eight points and team-highs of eight rebounds and four steals. It was a breakout performance for Ari Woodard (Oviedo, Fla.), who logged career-highs of 11 points and two steals in a career-best 14 minutes. Nine of her 11 points came in the fourth quarter as the freshman almost single-handedly kept the Pirates in the game.
Â
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
St. John's enters Sunday's contest with a 20-9 overall record and a 10-8 mark in BIG EAST play. Since last playing The Hall in Queens the Red Storm have gone 1-2 with a loss at DePaul on Feb. 10, a victory at Butler on Valentine's Day, and most recently, a 62-60 loss at home to Georgetown on Wednesday. Brooke Moore leads the team with 12.5 points per game. Sa'Mya Wyatt is averaging 11.2 points per game. Wyatt had 20 points and was 2-for-3 from three-point range against the Pirates two weeks ago. She was just 1-for-9 on the season from downtown entering the game.
