Christopher K's 10 as Pirates Claim First Win of Season

PONCE, PUERTO RICO – Jake Lopez collected three hits, Gabe Cavazzoni scored three runs and Mason Christopher struck out 10 in relief as Seton Hall claimed its first victory of the season, 7-2, over Manhattan on Saturday in Puerto Rico.
How it Happened
With both teams trying to bounce back from season-opening setbacks, it was the Jaspers who would get out to an early lead by plating a run in the first. Seton Hall would respond back in the third, as Lopez singled home Ryan Frontera who had reached on a base hit to open the frame.
The Pirates would take their first lead of the game in the fourth, as Aidan Sengenberger registered his first RBI in a Seton Hall uniform with a run scoring single to left. In the fifth, a crooked number would help Seton Hall extend its lead. After back-to-back singles opened the inning, Cavazzoni laced an RBI double down the left field line to score Shea Grady with the third Pirate run. Two batters later, Nick Tomasetto grounded out to short to allow Lopez to score from third. Next, Joey Wilga beat out an infield single to second, bringing home Cavazzoni and giving the Pirates a 5-1 lead.
While Seton Hall was scoring, Christopher was dominating on the mound. The sophomore entered on the mound to start the third inning and was spectacular over five innings of work. The lefty struck out 10 batters in his outing, allowing just four hits and one run.
In the seventh, Aidan Dill would bring home a sixth Pirate run on a groundout to second which allowed Cavazzoni to come home. Manhattan would finally get a run back in the eighth before a rain delay halted play for nearly 90 minutes. With the bases loaded after the resumption of play, the Pirates were able to escape the inning without any further damage.
In the ninth, the Pirates would tack on an insurance tally after loading the bases to open the inning. Ty Acker would be hit by a pitch to force home Cavazzoni, who would score his third run of the night.

The Pirates conclude their weekend in Puerto Rico on Sunday morning at 11 a.m when they face No. 17 NC State.
