Hill's Record-Breaking Day Powers Pirates Past Wildcats

How It Happened (Game One
After a strong first inning full of fly ball outs, Kelsey Carr found herself in trouble during the second inning with runners on the corners and one out after an error. However, the Pirates stout middle infield defense paid dividends when Andrea Perez's throw to home plate on a fielder's choice resulted in the second out, keeping the game scoreless. The final batter of the inning grounded out to Carr, helping the Pirates escape to the bottom of the frame with a clean scorebook.
Seton Hall and Villanova continued to feel each other out in the third inning, but neither offense managed to string anything of substance together. That was, however, until the bottom of the fourth inning. After putting two of their first three batters on base, Taylor Hill stepped to the plate in search of history. With one swing, Hill drove the ball over the centerfield wall for a three-run home run to put The Hall up 3-0. With that home run, as she crossed home plate, Hill passed Alexis Walkden for the most career runs scored in Seton Hall history.

As the game continued, Carr and the Pirates' defense continued to grind through the Wildcats. In the fifth inning, Villanova found their way onto the scoreboard off a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 Pirates' lead. While the Pirates failed to add to their lead, they entered the seventh inning up 3-1. A one-out home run from the Wildcats complicated things for a moment, but Carr retired the final two batters in order to secure the 3-2 victory in the series opener.
