Pirates Outlast Penn in Chaotic Northeast Clash

How It Happened
Near the banks of the Schuylkill River, the Pirates sailed out to an early lead. With one runner on, Hannah Alexander dropped a ball into shallow right field. As the fielder narrowly missed the catch, Katey Brennan came around to score to put the Pirates up 1-0 by the end of the first. Meanwhile, in the circle, Rachael Schumann pitched the best few innings of her season, allowing no hits through the first two innings.
It took until the third inning for the Pirates' explosive offense to finally break through. The inning opened with Angelina Benitez reaching first base on an error and the Pirates never looked back. Benitez scored on a Brennan double in the immediate aftermath, who then scored on a Kelsey Carr single to make it a 3-0 game. Not long after, Hannah Alexander's sacrifice fly scoring Taylor Hill made it a 4-0 game. The Hall capped off the third inning with a 5-0 lead after and error on an Andrea Perez line drive scored Carr from third base.
The first red mark on Schumann's stat line came in the bottom of the third, when a leadoff walk came around to score and make it a 5-1 ball game. The freshman bounced back in the fourth inning, however, stranding a pair of singles to maintain the Pirates lead heading into the fifth. The Pirates took advantage of that clean frame when Olivia Gilbert drove a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it a 7-1 game at the end of the fifth inning.
After her best appearance of the season, Schumann gave way to Karissa Dupuis to pitch the remainder of the game. The sophomore stymied the Quakers in the fifth inning, before running into a spot of bother in the sixth inning with runners on the corners and one out. While both runners came around to score, Dupuis shut the door on the Quakers and sent the Pirates to the seventh inning with the 7-3 lead.
After the Pirates offense could not find any more runs in the seventh inning, it was on the pitchers to secure the win. Despite collecting two outs, Dupuis exited the game with two outs after allowing a run and loading the bases in the inning of what was now a 7-4 game. In her stead, Carr came to the circle in need of a singular out. In dominant fashion, Carr struck the final batter out looking and secured the Pirates a 7-4 victory.
